We are less than a week away from the conclusion to the 2016 presidential election between Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Donald Trump and Governor Mike Pence recently visited Cedar Rapids, and now, it’s time for the Democrats. Daily Iowan TV reporter, Ay-zhuh Wit was in Iowa City covering a Clinton, Kaine rally that featured Senator Bernie Sanders.

Take/Pkg

Hundreds of Iowa City residents turned out Friday afternoon to hear Democratic Senator, Bernie Sanders speak at College Green park. Sanders returned to Iowa earlier this week and is advocating on behalf of 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton. In Iowa City, known for being a college town, Sanders urged residents, young and old, to get out and vote.

Sot: Bernie Sanders, Democratic Senator

Too many people in Iowa, and Vermont, and throughout this country, people like Tom Harkin, have put their lives on the line to defend American democracy. And we will not allow the cult brothers and a handful of other billionaires to convert this country into an oligarchy. Ain’t gonna happen.

Take/Pkg

This ‘Get-out-the-vote’ rally played host to a variety of supporters and protesters. Those against the North Dakota pipeline, citizens for Donald Trump and Green Party presidential nominee Dr. Jill Stine, and one known Iowa city resident; an avid supporter of both Sanders and Clinton.

IN THE UNITED STATES, SIXTY-THREE PERCENT OF AMERICANS SAY THEY’VE BOUGHT ORGANIC FOODS, OR BEVERAGES AT LEAST ONCE. THIRTY PERCENT OF THOSE AMERICANS ARE MILLENNIALS, OR THOSE AGED EIGHTEEN TO THIRTY-FOUR, WHO HAVE HELPED THE ORGANIC MARKET GROW NEARLY NINE PERCENT SINCE TWO-THOUSAND AND ELEVEN. DAILY IOWAN TV REPORTER, AY-ZHUH WIT IS IN IOWA CITY WITH MORE ON THIS.

TAKE/PKG

IN TWO-THOUSAND AND SIXTEEN, MORE AMERICANS ARE CHOOSING TO SHOP FOR ORGANIC, LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCTS. THIS FOOD IS PRIMARILY FREE FROM CHEMICAL PESTICIDES AND SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS, MAKING ORGANIC FOOD A LOT HEALTHIER FOR YOU.

SOT: GENIE MAYBANKS, NEWPI MARKETING COORDINATOR

THERE’S A CERTAIN RIPENESS, FRESHNESS FACTOR TO ORGANIC FOODS THAT ARE PICKED THE SAME DAY AS YOU CONSUME THEM. THEY TASTE BETTER, AND THEY TEND TO HAVE HIGHER VITAMIN AND MINERAL QUALITIES TO THEM.

TAKE/PKG

BECAUSE ORGANIC FOOD TAKES MORE TIME AND EFFORT TO PRODUCE, IT IS TRADITIONALLY MORE EXPENSIVE THAN CONVENTIONAL FOOD.

AND UNLIKE, MANY FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE SURPRISINGLY BEGAN ACCEPTING FOOD STAMPS, MOST ORGANIC GROCERY STORES STILL DON’T. ALONG WITH THE LACK OF ORGANIC GROCERY STORES IN LOWER INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS, THIS CAN LIMIT WHO IS ABLE TO EAT HEALTHY.

AS THE AVAILABILITY OF ORGANIC FOOD INCREASES, WE WILL LIKELY SEE A DECREASE IN ITS PRICES.

SOT: (MAYBANKS)

AS MORE ORGANIC IS AVAILABLE, AND THERE’S MORE DEMAND FOR IT, THE EFFICIENCIES ARE GOING TO START HELPING TO LEVEL THAT PLAYING FIELD.

TAKE/PKG

IN IOWA CITY, THERE ARE CURRENTLY FOUR ORGANIC GROCERY STORES. ONE OFFERS RESTAURANT QUALITY FOOD AND CATERING AT REASONABLE PRICES.

REPORTER ON CAM: AJA WITT, @ajarenata_witt

THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA WILL BE HOSTING IT’S SIXTEENTH ANNUAL ORGANIC CONFERENCE, NOVEMBER THIRTEENTH THROUGH THE FOURTEENTH. THIS IS A JOINT VENTURE WITH IOWA STATES AND A CHANCE FOR PRODUCERS AND EXPERTS, FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY, TO SHARE THEIR TIPS ON ORGANIC PRODUCING AND METHODS OF ORGANIC OPERATIONS. HIGH LEVELS OF NITRATE IN DRINKING WATER HAS BEEN LINKED TO CERTAIN CANCERS AND BIRTH DEFECTS. IN FARMING COMMUNITIES, PEOPLE ARE AT A GREATER RISK OF NITRATE WATER CONTAMINATION. HAWK NEWS TV REPORTER, AY-ZHUH WIT IS IN IOWA CITY TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO IMPROVE THEIR WATER QUALITY.

TAKE/PKG

THE IOWA CITY WATER SYSTEM CONSISTS OF 300 MILES OF SEWER PIPING WHICH DELIVERS 17 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER TO RESIDENTS EVERYDAY.

BEFORE THAT WATER REACHES YOUR FAUCET, IT IS STABILIZED, FILTERED, AND FLUORIDATED. BUT RECENTLY, SOIL TURNOVER, HEAVY RAINS, AND FARM FIELD RUNOFF HAS LED TO IOWA CITY NITRATE LEVELS THAT ARE HIGHER THAN EVER.

SOT: Joe Bolkcom, Iowa Senator

WEATHER CONDITIONS AND HOW MUCH RAINFALL WE HAVE, OR DON’T HAVE, HAS AN IMPACT ON HOW MUCH NITRATE GETS WASHED OFF OUR LANDS INTO THE RIVERS OF THE STATE. WHEN IT’S DRY WE DON’T HAVE A LOT OF NITRATE RUNOFF. WHEN IT GETS WET IT TENDS TO FLUSH THAT NITRATE INTO THE RIVERS.

TAKE/PKG

CONSUMED IN LARGE AMOUNTS, THIS CAN LEAD TO INCREASED CANCER, REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROBLEMS, AND NERVOUS SYSTEM PROBLEMS.

FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, ITS PERSONAL WATER TREATMENT PLANT PROVIDES SURFACE WATER, FROM THE IOWA RIVER, TO CAMPUS HOSPITALS AND DORMS.

SOT (Bolkcom)

THE CITY OF IOWA CITY BUILT A STATE OF THE ART WATER TREATMENT FACILITY FOR DRINKING WATER. AND WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO, NOT ONLY DRAW WATER OUT OF THE RIVER, BUT WE HAVE THE AVAILABILITY OF WELLS THAT HAVE BEEN DRILLED, AS WELL AS, THE ALLUVIAL AQUIFERS.

TAKE/PKG

THIS MAKES IT EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAT THE CITY AND ITS RESIDENTS KEEP THE IOWA RIVER CLEAN.

REPORTER ON CAM: Aja Witt, @ajarenata_witt

JOHNSON COUNTY RECENTLY ANNOUNCED IT IS IMPLEMENTING A NEW SOIL-COMPOSTING PROJECT. THE GOAL IS TO PROMOTE SOIL-QUALITY RESTORATION AND MORE EFFECTIVELY CONTROL WATER QUANTITY AND QUALITY.
