THE IOWA CITY CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSED AN AFFORDABLE HOUSING ACTION PLAN TUESDAY NIGHT. THE PLAN IS SAID TO EXEMPT THE RIVERFRONT CROSSING DISTRICT, DOWNTOWN, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA AREA.

THE HOPE IS TO INCREASE AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN MARGINALIZED AREAS OF THE CITY. WHILE COUNCILMAN KINGSLEY BOTCHWAY SUPPORTS THE HOUSING ACTION PLAN, HE DOES NOT SUPPORT ITS EXEMPTIONS.

“I DO HAVE ISSUES WITH US NOT NECESSARILY INCORPORATING THE DOWNTOWN UNIVERSITY AREAS. I THINK THAT OUR UNIVERSITY LADIES ON JACOB TALKED ABOUT, VERY, VERY CANDIDLY AND EXPLICITLY ABOUT, THE FACT THAT STUDENTS HAVE SOME OF THE SIMILAR ISSUES, AS FAR AS, WANTING OR NEEDING AFFORDABLE HOUSING. THAT’S WHY YOU SEE, YOU KNOW, FOUR, FIVE, SIX OCCUPANCY APARTMENTS OR HOMES.”

THE AVERAGE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA STUDENT SPENDS MORE ON ROOM AND BOARD THAN TUITION AND FEES. WHILE THIS IS PRIMARILY A UNIVERSITY ISSUE, THE IOWA CITY COUNCIL AND BOTCHWAY AGREE IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE U OF I TO TACKLE THIS PROBLEM WTHOUT THE HELP OF THE CITY.

“IOWA CITY WOULDN’T BE A CITY WITHOUT THE UNIVERSITY, AND SO, WE’RE INDEPENDENT, OR INTERDEPENDENT OF EACH OTHER. AND SO, WE HAVE TO HAVE MORE CONNECTED CONVERSATION.”
