MORE AND MORE UNIVERSITIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY ARE ADDING A VARIETY OF FOODS AND DINING OPTIONS TO THEIR DINING PROGRAMS. THE HOPE IS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY EATING AND TO PREVENT THE INFAMOUS FRESHMAN FIFTEEN.

CONVENIENCE STORES, IN UNIVERSITY OF IOWA RESIDENCE HALLS, OFFER A VARIETY OF SNACKS TO STUDENTS. FROZEN FOODS AND QUICK TREATS ARE THE NORM, AND, AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT, MOST OF THESE SNACKS ARE UNHEALTHY.

THE FRESHMAN FIFTEEN HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MAJOR TREND AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA. ON CAMPUS MARKETPLACES OFFER ALL DAY ACCESS TO UNHEALTHY FOODS FOR MOST STUDENTS WHO CAN’T FIND THE TIME TO EAT HEALTHY.

SOMETIMES THE HOURS FOR MEALS HERE, IT MAKES IT HARD TO GO TO BURGE AND GET SOMETHING HEALTHY-ISH, SO I TEND TO EAT A LITTLE BIT MORE FROZEN FOODS RECENTLY.

THE UNIVERSITY HAS STARTED OFFERING MORE FRESH FRUITS AND ORGANIC VEGETABLES TO STUDENTS. SOME STUDENTS, HOWEVER, PREFER THE TASTE OF A HOME-COOKED MEAL TO FROZEN PIZZAS. FULLY FUNCTIONING KITCHENS ALLOW A LOT OF STUDENTS TO BUY AND COOK THEIR OWN FOODS, SAVING THEM TIME AND MONEY.

MARISSA BELIEVES THE SCHOOL COULD DO A BETTER JOB AT OFFERING UP HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES IN THE DORMS.

AND WHILE THESE SELF-COOKED MEALS MAY NOT BE HEALTHIER FOR STUDENTS, OR LEAD TO LESS WEIGHT GAIN, THEY CERTAINLY OFFER A BIT OF HOME ON CAMPUS.
